Drive across Canada with the dog

My parents recently drove from BC to Ontario with their 80 pound German Sheppard/Wolf, Maggie May. No question it’s a long haul and planning the trip with the price of gas these days wasn’t exactly the best decision but they discovered the hardest part was finding pet friendly hotels along the way.

In the US there is a chain called Motel 6  which always accepts pets. Motels 6’s are all along the major US highways and it makes it super easy to highway travel with a dog. In Canada, pet friendly hotels are easy enough to find in large cities but when driving across this massive nation, cities are few and far between.

I found the following websites very helpful in searching for motels along Canada’s highways:

http://www.petfriendly.ca/ - has a good list of hotels searchable by province and city.

http://www.dogfriendly.com – this site attempts to cover the globe with their dog friendly listings but they do have a good list of Canadian properties. Canadian provinces are listed under the tab “Select a State” (I won’t go into details on how that irks me)

http://www.petscanstay.com – another one that breaks out Canadian cities. Nice, clean design.

Last but not least, I searched for “pet friendly” with a city/town name such as “pet friendly Sudbury, On” and that found me good results most of the time.

When seeking hotels/motels in Canada, here are a few chains that have properties which allow pets:
