All inclusive ugh!

In every Vagabond Poet’s life you are forced to make the decision, do I try an all inclusive resort or keep avoiding them all together. All inclusive resorts go against everything a “VP” stands for like blending with the locals, digging out the hidden hotel gems, traveling day by day to somewhere unique, diving into the local cuisine and shops.

But when the snow is coming down in brutal February and your inbox is full of emails about discount packages to “sun destinations”, you just can’t help yourself. As a Marketer you’d think I could see past their sneaky marketing tactics but as a human it’s impossible. This white-white skin deserves some sun. My husband deserves some stress free travel.  It’s easy to talk yourself into it.

So I booked a 4 star hotel in the Dominican Republic for a set price. The flight, transfers, food, activities, room were all included. It was fast and easy to book. However it only took one day at the resort to realize I had given up my vagabond spirit and was trapped in an all inclusive Disneyland. So we spent equally the same amount of money eating at the local town each night, shopping in the local grocers, testing out alternate tours to get away from the resort and sleeping on the beach around the corner where all the Dominicans hung out on their lunch break.

So if you are a vagabond poet and want to try all inclusive – make sure you’re walking distance to a local town and also make sure you don’t spend too much on the “package” because guaranteed you will double the cost upon arrival. If you are the type of person who wants to sit by pool all day and eat hamburgers while on holiday – ignore this post – and keep on doing what you’re doing
